What type of Lure should i be using in wavy saltwater fishing?

I have started fishing with lures, I have gone twice with them I haven't caught anything with them :( I am not going to give up though. I used a jig, with a nuclear chicken colored plastic minnow looking thing. Where I fish its really wavy water, what type of fishing lure should I be using? I was fishing in south texas on a pier in saltwater, also when do i know to use topwater lures, vs. jigs vs. everything else.

  1. maybe you should try in a more protected spot. perhaps on or near a jetty or some large rocks. us knowing your location would be a big help.
  2. Suspend or sinking lure. Top water lures like poppers, lipless, pencils will be rough for fish to spot and hit in rough waters.
  3. I've found that topwater works best early in the morning or later in the afternoon. That's not to say that they won't catch fish in the middle of the day. If it's really rough it will be hard to get the topwater lure to walk-the-dog like it's designed to do. Try using scented baits such as gulp in either the natural, molting or new penny colors.
  4. well you cant expect to throw just any lure and expect to catch a fish. You need to know what species of fish are in the area, what their habits are- where do they stay; on the bottom, around rocks, mid water column, what do they eat:shrimp, crabs, squid, other smaller bait fish, whatbait fishh are in the area. You need to "match the hatch" meaning your lure should mimic the bait they will be going after. look off the pier, do you see any schools of bait fish? If you can walk under the pier are there crabs? How big and what color are the bait fish that are present? What tide will you be fishing- incoming or outgoing? Whats the water temp?-the warmer the water the more active fish become if its too cold they`ll become lethargic and will sit and wait for the bait or lure to pass right by their face. I wouldn't just throw a lure in the water and hope for the best, you need to increase your odds, why would the fish bite your lure over the bait fish that are present- does your lure mimic an injured or distressed fish? It`s called fishing for a reason. If you caught fish every time they would call it Catching not Fishing. A Bad day of fishing is better thana good day at work.

  7. Have you tried throwing out any speck jigs yet? My comrades have been catching specks on double rigged speck jigs near Freeport. Chartreuse green and yellow is what they are hitting on in that area. There are lots of different colors to choose from depending on your water clarity in your area. Any bait shop or Walmart along that Tx coast carries speck jigs. I use to catch two specks at a time on those jigs when casting into a school of em. Follow the seagulls feeding on the water and cast out near em, can"t miss catching trout this way. Big saltwater spoons can also catch you some reds as well as specks this time of year. Work the spoon slowly back, bumping the bottom as your retrieving back in. Flounder will hit a slow spoon as well. The tide and waves gives the spoon great action without a fast retrieve. Unless your near an oyster reef most of the bottom along the South Tx. coast(surf) is flat and sandy. When your fishing the bays you have to worry more about the oyster reefs and hang ups. My personal favorite in the surf, between the second and third sandbars, is to use a popping cork with a live shrimp, small mullet, small croaker, or mud minnow. First choice being shrimp. If casting out past the third sandbar, then I fish the bottom with shrimp, small or cut mullet, squid, croaker, or cut up crevelle jack when I'm going for black tip. First choice at this spot is shrimp or small mullet. Tight Lines Feel free to email me for more info 40yr exp
